Places to Visit

Yercaud Lake
Yercaud Lake: a pool surrounded by gardens and well-wooded trees. The lake with its wonderful hilly surroundings and a well maintained garden on its banks is a feast for the eyes of any person. There is a floating fountain in the lake and boating facilities are available at a reasonable rate.

 

Ladies Seat & Gens Seat
Lady's Seat: Tourists can have a panoramic view of the plains below through the telescope mounted at the Lady's seat. Ladyís seat is a rock in the form of a seat on the South West of Shevaroy hills that overlooks the ghat road and Salem town.

Killiyur Falls
GD Another vantage view point; once adorned with stone built pagodas, it is now home to a large temple. Pagoda point or pyramid point is a viewpoint located on the eastern part of Yercaud hills. This has four piles of stones arranged so as to form a pyramid shape. It is said to be built by the English who used it as a marker for identifying the route from the plains to reach the top of the hills and now there is a Rama temple located between the piles of stones.


Pakoda Point

Shervarayan Temple
GD Museum is sitruated in the Avinashi Road. It is named after the scientist G.D.Naidu. Many inventions, discoveries and other materials are in display. It is an informative museum for all visitors.


Orchidarium
Botanical Survey of India. This is one of two orchidariums run by the Botanical survey of India. It has a large collection of native orchids. One can see the rare Ladies Slipper, an insect eating Orchid. A rare tree Shevaroys Bombax which was reported on one of the private estates has also been identified and multiplied in this farm. A treat for plant lovers. Botanical garden is closed during Saturday, Sunday and National holidays.

 

Tourism Spots in and arround Salem

Hogenakkal
River Cauvery flows through Hogenakkal, making it abundant in water resources. It has one of the most wonderful water falls in Tamil Nadu. It is situated about 250 metres above sea level. The main attraction is the bath in the falls, dropping vertically from a height of 20 metres with a thundering sound. A sacred bathing place, Hogenakkal is well known for the power of healing water. It is located 65 kms from Salem

Mettur DAM
One of the largest of its kind in the world, the Mettur Dam was completed in 1934. The total length of the dam is 1700 meters. The Mettur Hydro- Electrical power project is also quite large. The dam, the park, the major Hydro Electric power stations and hills on all sides make Mettur a good tourist attraction.

Kolli Hills
Situated in Tamil Nadu, Kolli Hills rises 1300 m into the sky. It takes 72 pen bends to climb to the highest peak of this place. But the oneís you should go sight-seeing for would be Sekkuparai and Selur Nadu. They are at the moment being promoted as touristic places and thatís why this is your chance to explore the unexplored. Ever heard of hybrid pineapples? Well this place has pineapple research farm which breeds a variety of never seen before pineapples.

 

Agaya Gangai Water Falls
Kollihills, Agaya Gangai waterfalls is located in Kolli Hills of the Eastern Ghats. Panchanathi, a jungle stream cascades down as the Agaya Gangai (En:Ganges of Sky), near the Arapaleeswarar temple atop the Kolli Hills in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. It is 300 ft waterfall of the river Aiyaru situated close to Arapaleeswarar temple. It is located in a valley that is surrounded by mountains on all sides.

Kurumbapatti Zoological Park
Kurumpapatti Zoological Park is a small zoological park situated at a distance of 6 km from the city of Salem. This park is mainly known for its bird species, like the white peacock and small multicolour cranes.

NAMAKKAL
Namakkal is a sacred city located near Salem of Tamil Nadu in South India. Its population comes around nearly half a lakh. The city has a hill named Shyla Malai at the center, which is also called Namagiri or Namakkal. Near that, the famous historical site named Kamalalayam is located. Namakkal is famous for Sri Anjaneya worshipping Sri Narasimha Perumal on the open plains. The Greatness of Lord Anjaneya: It is said that Lord Anjaneya brought the Salakrama Hills from Nepal as instructed by his guru Narasimha Murthy and named it as Namakkal. The Lord presents Himself in Vishwarupa Dharshan with His hands worshipping in the open terrace, exposing Himself to natural calamities like flood, hot sun and storm. It is believed that He keeps on growing height wise. The people of Namakkal pray to the Lord for blessing them with good sense, health, boldness, success, wealth and fine speech.
